Diane Stemper - Artist

The intersection between the natural world, daily living, science, and both the collective and individual experiences of landscape drive my ideas for my artist books. I am interested in the seam between human endeavors, natural occurrences, and encounters with specimens and species (both living and nonliving).

Diane Stemper received her B.F.A. in printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute and a M.A. in interdisciplinary arts from San Francisco State University, California. Most recently, Stemper exhibited her artist books in the exhibitions, Pressing On, Caza Sikes Gallery, Cincinnati, Ohio; A Symbiotic Affair, Special Collections, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio; Artful Books, Langsom Library, University of Cincinnati, Ohio; and The Printed Page, Regis University, Denver, Colorado.

The artist has participated in several artist book fairs, most recently Stemper was a 2023 exhibitor at Tropic Bound: Miami International Artist Book Fair, Miami, Florida and in 2022 she exhibited at Codex VIII: International Book Fair, Richmond, California. Upcoming March 2025, Stemper will display her prints and artist books at the Brooklyn Fine Art Print Fair taking place at Powerhouse Arts, Brooklyn, NY.

Additional exhibitions include Structure Unbound, Robert & Elaine Stein Gallery, Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio; Outside the Margins: Artists' Books at Loyola Notre Dame University, Baltimore, Maryland; and Stemper's Unique book, Then There Was You, was included in the 2017 installation by Sandra Cinto, Library of Love, Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, Ohio. In 2015, several of Stemper's artist books were featured in the exhibition, The Creative Codex: Books as Art in the Walter Havighurst Special Collections at Miami University in Ohio; and in 2014 she exhibited her artist books, prints, and petri dish books in Sample Close at Hand at the New York Center for Book Arts, New York.

The artist recently relocated her home to Sacramento, California. She is a member of the Sacramento community print shop, Myrtle Press.
